Monday/Tuesday, May 17th and 18th.

I forgot to bring my camera to work monday and tuesday this week, sorry. On monday Adam's friend Natalie was working with us in the studio. I cleaned and organized more patterns as well as sorted Adam's bin of zippers. On tuesday I went to Hawthorne Cutlery to get Adam's scissors and knives sharpened. My friend Nathan came out and had lunch with me too.

Thursday, May 13th.

Today was more pattern sorting. I marked some patterns Adam had made with the name of the customer, type of garment it was, date, piece that the panel corresponded with, and how many times the panel would need to be cut. Adam also taught me about grain lines. The grain in a fabric is the threads that run parallel to the selvedge (the long edge on a roll of fabric). Perpendicular to the grain is the cross grain. The grain is stronger than the cross grain. When mapping and cutting the pieces of a garment, the grain should run length-wise, this is represented in the long line bisecting the panel of the pattern in the picture below.

Having the grain run length-wise allows the garment to hang correctly. There is also a "true bias grain". This is the line that runs diagonally 45 degrees through the fabric. The true bias grain is the stretchy-ist line in the fabric.

Also on thursday, photographers came to shoot Adam in his studio for a new book on Portland entrepreneurs.

Tuesday, May 11th.

Tuesday I mostly organized patterns and fabric rolls and bolts under the table. Adam's friend Christy was also in the studio altering moving blankets to fit her portable photo booths for a business she runs with her husband.

Adam went to the fabric store and decided he wanted a muppet turtleneck sweater.

Monday, May 10th.

Monday was my first day working for Adam. I arrived at his studio at seven am, Adam typically gets there at six. I spent the day doing whatever tasks Adam needed from cleaning to changing the mannequins. I also learned how to use an industrial iron and began the large project of organizing all of Adam's patterns.

Adam worked on custom order jeans most of the day and I saw how a roll of denim turns into a pair of jeans from the pattern to the rivets.

Maya delivered all of the clothes from the show which I pressed and hung.

Friday, May 7th.

My school requires all the seniors to do some outside-of-classroom learning for the month of May called "Senior Projects". I was fortunate enough to get an internship with local fashion designer Adam Arnold. I didn't have to work on friday, but I went to the The Mercury "Open Season" fashion show which featured Adam as well as other Portland designers.

Adam's collection was inspired by the "comfort cult": the growing trend of people who feel it's ok to wear sweatpants and baggy hoodies in public. The strive for more comfort and less effort is perpetuated in the "X-treme Gulps" and footlong subs held by the models. When I asked Adam about the genesis of the concept, he told me, "I like to find inspiration in things I am not inspired by".

All in all the show was pretty interesting and a lot of fun. More photos from the event here.

I am so excited for this video. I'm a huge fan of Japanese skateboarding videos as is, but this upcoming film by Daisuke Takahashi features an all star cast of both Japanese and American skateboarders including Chris Haslam, Rodney Mullen, Cooper Wilt, Kenny Anderson, Rick McCrank, Mike Anderson, Gou Miyagi, and Shinpei Ueno (just to name a few). Last week I went on a trip to the east coast with my dad to visit some colleges.

The buildings in Manhattan were a visually stunning collage of styles.

We went to The Museum of Chinese in America. This was an antique toy on display, when you pull the trigger the white guy pulls the chinese guy's braid and kicks him.

Ran into an old friend: Siobhan aka Eyeris.

Had dinner at Momofuku with one of my favorite artists, Tom Sachs. Cecilia Dean, editor and co-founder of Visionaire, was also present. The mass of pork in the picture was super fuckin' good and the conversation was even better.

Ran into one of my favorite skateboarders/photographers/people of all time, Jerry Hsu, in The Ace Hotel elevator. I was so nervous and excited that I accidentally got off on the wrong floor. When I saw him again leaving the lobby I had to get a picture.

Yesterday I went to local designer Adam Arnold's spring show/studio christening. I went alone and felt a little awkward at the party, but met some nice people. The event was a sock party so everyone came in their best foot-underwear; there were even girls from Portland's Sock Dreams giving complimentary pairs of socks to the guests. The show itself was very casual and warm unlike other shows I've been to, and displayed amazing craftsmanship (as expected from Mr. Arnold). Congrats Adam!

Senior Lounge Art Show Recap

Last saturday me and a couple friends held an art show in our senior-community lounge at my school.

Draye is a master musician and also a experimental visual artist.

Will did some awesome pieces using optical devices such as the "TELE VISION": a telescope focused across the room on a image backlit by a small television (shown below).

Max used his creativity to decorate the room seen in the trophy taped above the doorway. He also created the largest piece of the show, an officer in charcoal on overlapping sheets of paper which he then separated to fit side by side.

Joey (right) contributed the most artwork including an Abe Lincoln portrait, life drawings, and a musical performance. Irene (left) made a avant garde sculptural piece in the fireplace.

Oliver contributed the photography and a collage, unfortunately not done justice here. Sara supplied the intricate landscapes. Jasmine made painting portraying Captain Crunch hedonistically about to devour a nude woman in a spoon saying, "OBJECTIFY ME CAP'N". Jasmine's piece has gone missing since the opening.

As for my contributions, I painted a bird which was put on the ceiling and a bunch of bananas which was put on the wall. Details and motives can be seen on my portfolio blog.

Complex's website has a cool timeline of Pastelle, Kanye's clothing line-that-never-was. I like the designs, attire possibly for a robotic highschooler in the year 2500. And and the fact that it will never be available to the public makes it like a cryptid of the streetwear world. Too bad...

Tim Van Steenbergen is a belgian designer "in search of old values in a new world". This philosophy shows in his winter 09-10 collection, which utilizes traditional functional fabrics such as wool, leather, and fleece in familiar shapes like the trench coat, but twists, folds, and drapes them into complex and original pieces. Also, each garment is hand-made.

Catlin Gabel 65th Rummage Sale

This year a sixty-five year old tradition at my school, the annual Catlin Gabel Rummage Sale, is coming to an end due to a lack of volunteers, decline in good rummage, and insufficient profits (which all go to financial aid for the students). I love the Rummage Sale and will sorely miss panning for gold among the pounds and pounds of unwanted goods. Here are this year's purchases:

I dug these YSL shoes out of the box going to Goodwill. The heels are a little messed up, but they were free.

The Jelly Generation show is a show put on by Studio J (my family's studio). It opened in early October and was supposed to go until the end of the month, but now will be up for November as well. The show features Chinese artists from the 80s and 90s, known as the Jelly Generation for their colorful nature. Timed to coordinate with the China Design Now show at the Portland Art Museum (you should go if you haven't), the Jelly Gen show hopes to offer a more youthful perspective on chinese art. Please stop by if you can, its open mondays through saturdays: twelve to seven. The show is in the Goldsmith Building on NW 5th and Couch.

I was with some people in the Pearl district and had my camera out when I heard "PICTURES YEAH!" and saw this guy running from the bar across the street. He posed and when the picture wouldn't take he yelled, "JUST TAKE THE PICTURE AND QUIT STARING AT MY BALLS!"
Then I got this gem.

This is Embarcadero in San Francisco, a legendary skate spot. The place was made unskate-able by the government in 1999, yet skateboarding lives on at Embarcadero through this little weirdo.

Locals: STARFUCKER

Last night I spent my halloween at the last ever STARFUCKER show. For those who don't know, STARFUCKER is a local band that has recently been receiving some attention and were featured in Target and IBM commercials. After losing out on gigs with Passion Pit and occasionally having to censor their name to STARF*****, it seemed they had outgrown their name and decided to change it to PYRAMIDDD. Although I felt the departure from STARFUCKER implied a loss of that Portland quirkiness, after last night's show it's clear they're the same dudes who brought us Sexton Blake and will continue to bring that STARFUCKER spirit. They came out in full Star Trek attire as the theme song boomed and by the end of the night I couldn't help but feel emotional as they played their last song, German Love. Here's an interesting interview explaining more behind the name change.

way or another. Here are just a few of my favorites. They have not been altered at all, click to enlarge.

This is Eddie walking in the snow, that night we tried to sleep in his car but a policeman came and told us to go home.

These two guys were sitting behind this parked car on the curb when they started arguing. It escalated into a fight and five cops instantaneously pulled up on various forms of transportation and arrested them. The woman on the left is holding a tazer.

Oliver, Julien, Spencer and I went to what we thought was an abandoned insane asylum an hour outside of Portland. The place was probably a enormous church in its former life but now was dark, vandalized, and eerily quiet shell of a building. When we heard people coming we tried to run but nearly collided with some security guards around a corner. They both had guns drawn, one a machine gun and the other a handgun. After they found out we didn't have any weapons they let us go. As we were walking back to our car some hick-ish people who lived across the street yelled at us.

This was taken after I broke my ankle, two weeks or so after I got my cast off.

Asians I Look Up To: Jerry Hsu

Jerry Hsu and I have alot in common. He's chinese-american, I'm chinese-american. He likes skateboarding, I like skateboarding. He takes pictures, I take pictures. He's recovering from a serious injury, I'm recovering from a (fairly) serious injury. But unlike me, Jerry Hsu speaks chinese fluently, is absurdly good on a skateboard, and is a contributing photographer for Vice Magazine. He also just covered Skateboarder Magazine with a ridiculous backside 50-50.

The first annual Content show at the Ace Hotel was amazing. The halls of the second floor were hot, semi-chaotic, and packed with flapper girl imitators, hipsters, sneakerheads, and fashionistas ranging from children to elders. When I stepped outside for a breath of air Childhood Flames' Camille walked right by me, I was star-struck. Unfortunately there were a couple of rooms I couldn't get to, but here were some of the highlights.

This October 18th is the Ace Hotel's Content show, where local fashion and accessory designers will each outfit a room with their goods in the hotel. The designers include many names you might have seen on this blog, Hazel Cox, Heather Treadway, idom as well as many other exciting names like Adam Arnold and Liza Rietz. Show starts at 5pm and costs $10. Check out the website for more details.

Skate and Create 2009

Skate and Create is a annual competition held by Transworld Skateboarding. Basically a handful of pro teams build a indoor set and get a couple days to film a video. This year's teams were DVS (last year's winners), DC, Etnies, and C1RCA.

DVS never fails to impress. This one was my favorite, beautifully done and I love the DVS team.

This year's winner was Etnies. Prodigy Sean Malto takes center stage in "Boxton". Also features Oregon native Tyler Bledsoe.

DC made great sets inspired by Philly, New York, San Fran and LA. Kickflip late frontside shovit was dope.

C1RCA's video had a great video using light, soft focus, and a Grand Torino.

Portland Fashion Week: Friday

Friday night I went to a Portland Fashion Week show displaying Amai Unmei, idom, Jessica Milton (from Seattle), La Vie and WyattOrr (from Seattle). This week the show returned to the Shipyard on Swan Island: a very cool industrial location, but a little off the map. I was supposed to go with my friend but she bailed on me so I hung out awkwardly by myself until the show started. After standing around for a half hour waiting to be seated, I finally got to the runway where I stood some more. I know Portland Fashion Week's trying to gain a more legitimate reputation, but I don't think a fifth row of seats is too much to ask for. The show started an hour late which was frustrating because I had SATs the next morning at seven thirty. Despite all this, I had a good time at the show, here are some of my favorite pictures and looks from the night. Click to make bigger.

Takashi Murakami recently collaborated with Kirsten Dunst and Director McG on a video project titled "Akihabara Majokko Princess". The video features Kirsten Dunst as a princess singing "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors in Akihabara Tokyo. Murakami is a genius.

Michael Lau is a Chinese artist from Hong Kong famous for his toys. Check out his latest collaboration with Nike SB, a woodgrain Janoski similar to his SB dunk. Made in conjunction with his Gardener Tenth Exhibition, these look really good. Plus my birthday's lasered into the left heel!

Nike Air Yeezy VI Sample

Although I'm not really a sneakerhead anymore, these really caught my eye! They're samples of Kanye West's shoe with Nike, the Air Yeezy, with a Jordan VI sole. Also note the suede toe cap, upper and eyestay. Only one in existence, wasn't even shown to Kanye. Now on Ebay along with the Grammy samples to benefit Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

Old Town Block Party Recap

Just got back from the First annual Old Town block party, twas good fun. Here's some photos from the event.

A lot of cute puppies.

Ohmega Watts. I watched some of his set with M64, but didn't get any good pictures unfortunately.

May Ling was really good, they even had Chinese lions come dance with the crowd. During the show a old woman got in front of the stage and exposed her breasts. Awesome.

YACHT was also a lot of fun. The performance culminated with an acapella sing-along encore with YACHT in the middle of the crowd. Also I loved their black and white outfits.

Fashion's Night Out PDX 2009

Last night I attended the 2009 Fahsion's Night Out held this year at Wieden Kennedy. The event is put on by Saks Fifth Avenue annually to benefit the KEX Kids Fund, which provides hearing aids and glasses to kids in need. The show was composed of fall looks from the Saks Fifth Avenue stores. Here are some of my photos from the show.
